PSAT/NMSQT - The Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test is used to determine preliminary eligibility for juniors in the National Merit Scholars competition. Students who become National Merit Finalists may win scholarships up to $2,500. The PSAT is recommended for all four-year college bound students. The PSAT is also beneficial for:

• assessing your ability to do college work

• becoming familiar with the format of the SAT

• participating in College Board's Student Search Service which provides students with information about college and scholarship opportunities

• entering the competition for the National Achievement Program for Outstanding Black Students.

Student Timelines

SOPHOMORES:
PSAT --for honors sophomores in October
SAT Subject Tests --take in June for any subjects completed (AP European History, Biology, Chemistry) in freshman or sophomore year, if UC or competitive college bound.

JUNIORS:
ASVAB --testing dates vary
PSAT --October
SAT or ACT --May or June
SAT Subject Tests --June (cannot be taken on the same day as SAT )

SENIORS:
SAT or ACT in October or November -- first time or repeat
SAT Subject Tests in November --first time or repeat

Registration and Costs

PSAT: Given at each high school. Register at your own school early in October. Cost is $20.00.

CUSD has unilaterally enrolled every 9th 10th and 11th grade student in the district is a special PSAT program. The FREE option is offered through a partnership between College Board and Khan Academy.

There is no such thing as FREE. In exchange for providing the test free of charge your student is agreeing to provide personally identifiable data to Kahn Academy and third party vendors such as Google and Facebook.

"We may share data in connection with special programs you participate in."

"If you participate in special programs where Khan Academy partners with third parties, Khan Academy may share data collected from or about you with its third party partners to facilitate the program or services being offered. For instance, if you participate in Khan Academy’s program with College Board, Khan Academy may share information regarding your study habits, tests taken, and test scores with College Board."

CUSD's unilateral choice to offer students only the PSAT through this "special program" does not provide students with the ability to OPT OUT. CUSD has enrolled ALL students in this PSAT special program and that includes ORA Personality Profiler. Personally Identifiable Information is suppose to be protected. Students and Parents should be asked if they want to OPT IN to this special program. This is unique to CUSD. If you look at Saddleback and Laguna Beach, their students are taking the PSAT directly through College Board at a cost of $20 per student.

CUSD has unilaterally taken away every 9th 10th and 11th grade students right to privacy away. Kahn Academy's terms of service clearly state that students must OPT IN to participate. CUSD may be in violation of the Terms of Service Agreement with Kahn Academy.

Parents have the right to opt their child out of this program. CUSD did not have the right to Opt your child in without express consent from a parent or guardian.
