Are We The Next Colorado- Find out how marijuana legalization has changed the State of Colorado and what it means for California's youth

San Clemente Community Center

March 8, 2016 at 7:00 pm (doors open 6:30)

Dear CUSD Parents,

Find out what's happening in San Juan Capistranofor free with the latest updates from Patch.

I would like to invite you to a special event on March 8th at 6:30 pm hosted by the Wellness & Prevention Center regarding marijuana. There's a national push to normalize and commercial the use of marijuana by well-funded businesses. Youth are bombarded with information about marijuana from their peers, the internet, the entertainment industry and the marijuana industry itself which is projected to be a $6.7 billion business. Ben Cort, a drug policy expert, will present factual data so that we better understand the risks of today’s marijuana.

An initiative for the legalization of marijuana will likely appear on the 2016 ballot, so the Wellness & Prevention Center knows it is important that our community is aware of research backed information. Mr. Cort is well versed in the social and economic impacts of legalizing marijuana and will address the following:

Find out what's happening in San Juan Capistranofor free with the latest updates from Patch.

· What are the health effects of today’s marijuana?

· Does legalized marijuana lead to more traffic accidents – or more citations for driving under the influence?

· How will legalization affect the growing number of sober living and addiction treatment facilities in Southern California (we have more facilities per capita than most other states)

· Will it generate significant tax revenues?

· How has it affected high school graduation rates and discipline issues?

The marijuana debate is not just about legalizing a substance, it also is a valuable lesson about marketing, the influence and sway of media, and the value of science-based data. Attached is the flyer with the details. Ben Cort will be addressing our San Clemente High School students during the school day and we encourage adults to attend the evening event.

Sincerely,

Susan Parmelee, ACSW
