Yes on B Outspends No Camp by More Than $135,000

A report on Measure B campaign expenditures and spending through May 21.

At last count, landowners aiming to keep alive a disputed mixed-use development along La Novia Avenue raked in $138,547.53 more than the small coalition of San Juan Capistrano residents who oppose it.

Yes on Measure B, a committee funded by Lake Forest-based developers Advanced Real Estate Services, built a campaign chest of $145,634.02 in donations and spent $121,454.03 between April 24 and May 21. 

In comparison, Citizens for Sensible Development, a committee formed to oppose the ballot measure starring in today's special election, garnered $7,086.49. The citizens group, which organizers said is led by a handful of residents, had spent $7,086.49.

The California Association of Realtors is supporting a yes vote. The group's Issues Mobilization Political Action Committee spent $24,914.27 on graphic design, mailers and postage, consulting services and "polling."

These expenditures are in addition to those made by Yes on Measure B for campaign literature and mailings, campaign consultants (Los Angeles-based Burnside and Associates, Mission Viejo-based Sherri Butterfield and Laguna Niguel based-Pam Dwitt and Eileen Padberg Consulting), phone banks, print ads in the Capistrano Dispatch and the Orange County Register, reception costs to the San Juan Capistrano Chamber of Commerce, Costco, the Vintage and office and information technology expenses.

Citizens for Sensible Development spent its donations on campaign literature at XPress Printing in Santa Ana. Most of its donations come from retired residents.
