13 Displaced And 3 Cats Rescued During Blaze In San Leandro: Fire Officials

SAN LEANDRO, CA — Thirteen people were displaced, and at least three cats were rescued during an apartment blaze that sent plumes of white smoke into the San Leandro sky on Tuesday, according to authorities.

Fire officials say the blaze broke out just before 7 p.m. at an eight-unit apartment building in the 4700 block of Springlake Drive.

Video posted by the Alameda County Fire Department on Wednesday shows masked-up crews at the scene working through heavy smoke and fire.

It's unclear what started the blaze, and no injuries were reported as residents had already safely evacuated when crews arrived.

Fire crews, however, rescued three cats that were still in the building when they showed up, authorities said. A firefighter can be seen in a video reuniting the feline with their owners.

It took fire crews less than 20 minutes to bring the blaze under control, authorities said.

Two apartments were destroyed, and another two suffered minor smoke damage, fire crews said. Thirteen people and eight pets were displaced as a result of the fire, authorities said.

The Red Cross responded to the scene to help the displaced residents, fire officials added.
