2 Arrested For San Leandro Carjacking

The victim was getting off work from a restaurant when the crime happened, police say.

SAN LEANDRO, CA — A man and a woman have been charged with felony carjacking and robbery for allegedly taking a car from a San Leandro restaurant employee after he finished his shift early Monday morning, police said.

At about 4 a.m. on Monday, an employee at Nations Hamburgers in the Washington Plaza who had just finished his shift was walking to his parked vehicle at the rear of the plaza, close to Hays Street, when another
vehicle pulled up and a man who had his face covered with a hooded jacket got out, according to police.

The male suspect produced what appeared to be a handgun and demanded the victim's money and vehicle keys and afterward the victim was ordered to lay on the ground while the suspect fled in the victim's vehicle.

The victim watched as both his vehicle and the suspect vehicle left, according to police.

Officers responded to the scene and began canvassing the area and another officer who was on patrol located both the suspect vehicle and the stolen vehicle parked in the Davis Street Market's parking lot with the
occupants standing outside, police said.

As the patrol officer turned around, the suspects fled the lot in the suspect vehicle, leaving the stolen vehicle behind, according to police.

The patrol officer gave chase as the suspect drove into a dead-end street and additional units arrived and both suspects were taken into custody without incident.

An "air-soft" replica firearm was located hidden under the seat of the suspect's vehicle, according to police.

Suspects Jarell Hubbard, 21, of San Leandro and Oanh Hoang, 24, of Hayward confessed to their involvement in the offenses, police said.

San Leandro police spokesman Lt. Isaac Benabou said, "The victim escaped potential injury by complying with the suspect at the time of the crime."

Hubbard and Hoang, who are being held at the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin in lieu of $200,000 bail, have been arraigned on the robbery and carjacking charges and are scheduled to return to court on June 11.
