5 Years of Kaiser Permanente's San Leandro Medical Center

The Kaiser Permanente San Leandro Medical Center is celebrating its fifth anniversary of providing high quality health care to the community and its 250,000 members in southern Alameda County. The 216-bed state-of-the-art hospital set a new community standard for patient care when it opened in June 2014, utilizing cutting-edge health care technology and featuring all private rooms and a large 24/7 emergency department with 40 private treatment rooms.

"It took the collaboration, dedication and hard work of thousands of people to build this medical center and to transform it into what it is today," said Michelle Gaskill-Hames, senior vice president and area manager for Kaiser Permanente in southern Alameda County. "Kudos to all of our doctors, nurses and staff who are always seeking ways to enhance the quality and great care we provide daily to our patients, members and community."

In the past five years, the 712,000 square foot hospital and medical office building has treated 400,000 emergency patients, delivered 7,000 babies, and replaced 20,000 joints. The medical center has been recognized for high-quality stroke care by the American Heart Association / American Stroke Association as a member of the Target Stroke Elite Plus Honor Roll. The medical center is also designated as a Comprehensive Community Cancer Center. Recently, the medical center opened an Urgent Care center to enhance convenience for its members. With over 2,100 employees and physicians, the San Leandro Medical Center is the largest hospital in San Leandro and a major employer in the area.

Every Wednesday, the medical center hosts a farmers market, providing members and the community access to fresh fruits and vegetables. Inside the hospital, hallways, rooms and an atrium are filled with installations by local artists, making the San Leandro Medical Center a healing environment for the entire community.

The medical center has been recognized for superior quality by independent organizations, most recently earning an "A" for patient safety by the Leapfrog Group, a leading consumer advocacy group for purchasers of health insurance. About 9 of every 10 joint replacement patients go home the same day as their surgery, one of the highest rates in the nation. The joint replacement program was recently recognized as a Specialty Excellence Program award by Healthgrades, placing it in the top tenth of such programs nationally.

The San Leandro Medical Center provides comprehensive services for members and patients, including an emergency department, urgent care, labor and delivery, a level 3 neonatal intensive care unit, adult and family medicine, neurology, orthopedics, radiology/imaging, laboratory services, and a pharmacy.
