Deadly Coronavirus: Alameda County Residents Tested: Reports

The new virus emerged in China and has sickened hundreds, and killed more than two dozen. The first US case was announced on Tuesday.

ALAMEDA COUNTY, CA — Alameda County Health officials have tested several people for the deadly new coronavirus, 2019-nCoV, that was first detected in Wuhan City, China, according to multiple reports. There are no confirmed cases in Alameda County, as officials await test results from the US Centers for Disease Control.

The local people who were tested had either been in Wuhan and now have symptoms of the illness or they have been in contact with someone who had the virus.

According to the CDC, the symptoms of the Wuhan coronavirus are:

  • fever

The CDC says that symptoms range from mild to severe and appear in as few as 2 days or as long as 14 days after exposure.

The latest from China’s National Health Commission is that 830 cases have been confirmed, with 25 deaths, according to a report from the Associated Press. Three cities with a combined population of 18 million people are locked down, as China tries to contain the virus.

Outside of China, cases have been confirmed in the United States, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and Thailand.

The first confirmed case in the US is in Seattle. That case was confirmed on Tuesday. Thursday morning it was reported that someone who arrived in Los Angeles is being tested for the coronavirus. There is also a suspected case in Texas.

In addition to testing samples from people suspected of having the Wuhan coronavirus, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued travel advisories for China, and it has ordered screenings of travelers as they arrive at five US airports from certain areas of China. Those airports are San Francisco (SFO), Atlanta (ATL), Chicago (ORD), Los Angeles (LAX), and New York City (JFK).
