1 Dead, 4 Injured In Crash Involving Ambulance

Three of the 5 patients sent to the hospital in the San Lorenzo crash are emergency personnel.

SAN LORENZO, CA — A San Leandro woman being transported to the hospital by ambulance has died after the ambulance overturned in a T-bone crash in San Lorenzo. She died after being transported to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley. It is unclear if she died from the condition that put her in the ambulance in the first place, or if she died of injuries suffered in the crash. Her name has not been released.

Four other people were also transported to the hospital for injuries suffered in the crash. The driver of the car that hit the ambulance suffered moderate injuries and is still hospitalized. Three emergency workers from the ambulance were treated and released.

The crash happened in the intersection at Hesperian and Lewelling Boulevards, causing a major traffic backup that lasted for hours.

The ambulance had its red lights and siren running at the time of the crash.

The CHP is investigating the crash with the assistance of the Alameda County Sheriff's Office. Anyone who witnessed the crash has been asked to contact the CHP at (510) 581-9028
