Suspect In Shooting That Nearly Struck Toddler In San Leandro Arrested

Police found an AR-15 rifle when they searched the suspect's car.

SAN LEANDRO, CA — A 37-year-old man was arrested in connection with a shooting in San Leandro in February that nearly struck a toddler, police said.

Police say San Leandro resident Juan Estrada was in a car in the 700 block of Barri Drive around 7 p.m. on Feb. 15, when he fired a single round towards another vehicle.

The gunfire narrowly missed a one-year-old child who was inside the vehicle, according to the San Leandro Police Department.

Using Flock Public Safety Cameras, social media analysis and cell phone records, investigators were able to link Estrada to the shooting, police said.

On Monday, officers located Estrada in San Loreno and took him into custody, police said.

When authorities searched Estrada's car, they found a loaded short-barreled AR-15-style rifle with an extended magazine, authorities said. Police did not say whether that gun was used in the shooting.

More evidence was later found when they searched his home, police said. Officers have since submitted the case to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office.

"This investigation reflects the dedication of our officers and detectives to keeping our community safe and using every available tool to hold violent offenders accountable," San Leandro Police Department Lieutenant Jeff Walton said.
