SAN LEANDRO, CA — A popular Bay Area chocolate company has recalled several of its powder mixes because they may be contaminated with salmonella.

Ghirardelli, which is based in San Leandro, issued a recall Monday for certain powdered beverage mixes. The mixes affected are packaged in large formats intended for food services, but some may also have been available for purchase by consumers through e-commerce platforms.

"This action follows a California Dairies, Inc. milk powder recall due to a concern of potential Salmonella contamination, which was supplied to a third-party manufacturer and used as an ingredient in powdered beverage mixes," the company said in a statement Monday.

No illness connected with the products has been reported to date, according to the company.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

Symptoms usually start between six hours and six days after swallowing the bacteria. Most people recover within a week without medical treatment, according to the CDC.
