San Leandro Police Kill Man They Say Pointed Gun At Officers During Welfare Check

SAN LEANDRO, CA — San Leandro police say they fatally shot a man who pointed a gun at officers during a welfare check Thursday night.

The man had been making "suicidal statements" to a friend, who called on officers to check on him at his home in the 14500 block of Santiago Road, according to the San Leandro Police Department.

Responding officers failed to find the man in his home, but located him nearby just after 8 p.m. at the San Leandro Marina, sitting inside a vehicle near the boat launch, police said.

Officers interacted with the man for several minutes before he pulled a gun out and pointed it at them, police said.

That's when the officers shot the man, killing him, police said.

The SLPD's Criminal Investigation Division is investigating the shooting. The department says three officers were involved. None were injured. They'll be placed on administrative leave while the department investigates.

The Alameda County District Attorney's Office will also conduct its own independent investigation into the shooting.

"While SLPD remains committed to transparency, the release of additional information related to this incident will be limited at this time to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation and in accordance with applicable laws," police said.
