SAN LEANDRO, CA — San Leandro will be hoisting the Pride flag during a special ceremony next month, officials said.

The flag-raising ceremony will take place around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 6, in front of the San Leandro Main Public Library, San Leandro city officials said.

Elected officials and community leaders will be in attendance at the event, which celebrates San Leandro's "inspirational" and "impactful" diversity, Mayor Juan González said Tuesday.

"That's exactly why we must continue to courageously cultivate an inclusive environment where each person feels welcomed and celebrated," González said. "Our LGBTQ+ community has my unwavering support, as we work together to ensure that everyone is treated with dignity and respect."

The flag-raising ceremony coincides with June being Pride Month. Pride Month was established to commemorate the Stonewall Riots. The first Pride Month was held in 1970, a year after the riots.

This year's ceremony takes place on the same day as the historic Cherry Festival. The flag-raising will take place about 15 minutes after the parade ends.
