SAN LEANDRO, CA — Want the chance to earn free prizes, such as going to an Oakland Roots game or a pass to the Lawrence Hall of Science, just for reading and doing fun activities?
The San Leandro Public Library is making it happen with its annual summer program.
The program begins on Monday and will run through the end of July. The program awards participants points by reading or listening to books and completing activities, according to library officials.
"Our Summer Library Program is designed to bring the community together," Library Director Brian Simons said in a statement on Wednesday. "We’ve created a lineup of activities and events that invite people of all ages to explore, learn, and have fun at their library."
Some of those activities include "weekly enrichment programs for toddlers and school-age youth, family movie days, chess tournaments, teen life‑skills workshops, and a variety of engaging programs for adults," library officials said.
To get started, participants will need to visit the Main Library at 300 Estudllo Ave or the Manor Branch at 1241 Manor Blvd. starting Monday to receive a Summer Library program activity log. Participants can also join online. Participants will get 10 points just for signing up, officials added.
After signing up, youth participants can earn points and redeem them for prizes. Adults, meanwhile, will earn a. cahcne to win a grand prize. Officials did not say what the prize was.
A special finisher prize will also be awarded to everyone who earns 100 points by the end of the program on July 31, officials said.
Prizes are divided by age groups and include an invitation to the Summer Carnival on August 1, for ages zero to 11, a gift card for As Kneaded Bakery (Main Library) or Clancy’s Ice Cream (Manor Branch), ages 12 to 17 and a mini tote bag for everyone 18 and over, officials said.
"Summer reading isn’t just enjoyable—it plays an important role in helping students stay engaged and continue learning when school is out," Simons said. "We’re proud to support families and lifelong learners with a program that blends reading, creativity, and community connection."
