Suspect Arrested In San Leandro Vehicle Vandalism Spree

The investigation into the spree began when someone used a rock to break a parked car's window on Tuesday, Aug. 18, police said.

SAN LEANDRO, CA — A man was charged this week in connection with a series of vandalism acts across San Leandro last month, police said.

The investigation started when someone smashed a parked car's window with a rock in the 200 block of Garcia Avenue on Tuesday, Aug. 18, according to the San Leandro Police Department.

Two similar acts of vandalism followed more than a week later, police said.

With the help of community members and surveillance footage, officers identified 37-year-old San Leandro resident Darrian Hardaway as a suspect, police said.

Officers finally crashed down Hardaway on Monday, police said.

Hardaway had just vandalized another car in the 100 block of Farrelly Drive when officers were called to the scene, police said.

Hardaway ran before officers arrived, but he was taken into custody on suspicion of vandalism shortly after, police said.

Officers also recovered clothes Hardaway used during the series of crimes, police said.

"We are grateful to the members of our community whose awareness and willingness to bring these crimes to our attention helped officers identify and arrest the suspect," San Leandro Police Department Lieutenant Jeff Walton said in a statement on Thursday morning.

The Alameda County District Attorney's Office files charges of felony vandalism and felony evading a peace officer against Hardaway, police said.

The case remains under investigation, police said. Police ask that anyone with information call the department at 510-577-2740.
