SAN LEANDRO, CA — A felon on probation for a previous firearm conviction was arrested in San Leandro this week for possession of a loaded subcompact assault rifle with a "banana" style high capacity magazine. The weapon was loaded with 39 rounds of ammunition, police report.
"The weapon that was located by our officers is capable of causing serious harm," said San Leandro Police Lieutenant Isaac Benabou. "This is a weapon designed for war, but yet found in the possession of a convicted felon in our community. Thankfully it has been taken out of the hands of a dangerous individual."
Daniel Lamar of Oakland has a criminal history that spans Los Angeles, Stanislaus, Sacramento, and Alameda counties. He was booked into Santa Rita Jail in Dublin.

Police stumbled upon Lamar on Monday when they were called to a downtown paint store because a woman customer was attempting to use a fraudulent credit card. Officers contacted the woman and her male friend, Lamar. "Officers found that Lamar was on probation for a previous firearm violation," they said in a written release. "During the investigation, officers searched Lamar's vehicle." Police say that's where the assault weapon was found.
The Alameda County District Attorney charged Lamar with three felonies and one enhancement charge.
