BART: Major Damage Caused By Golf-Club Swinging Man

One train had to be taken out of service. An Oakland station was also damaged.

OAKLAND, CA — BART police arrested a man who used a golf club to damage windows in a BART train and in the West Oakland station this afternoon, a BART spokeswoman said.

The incident was initially reported at about 1:30 p.m. at the station's East Bay-bound platform. The man smashed windows on board a Dublin/Pleasanton train there, then started walking down the stairs from the
platform and smashing windows along the stairway, BART spokeswoman Alicia Trost said.

BART police responded and quickly took the man into custody. The damaged train had to be taken out of service, backing up service for all lines going into and out of San Francisco, Trost said.

Regular service resumed through the station with residual delays as of shortly after 2 p.m., Trost said. Service was back to normal by 3 p.m., well ahead of the evening commute.

The man never swung the golf club at any people in the station and just damaged windows, Trost said. No one was injured.
