Car Thief Leads Cops On Pursuit; 2 Arrested: Police

After collision, the chase went from San Leandro though Oakland.

SAN LEANDRO, CA –Police arrested two people who led officers on a pursuit in a
stolen vehicle Wednesday in San Leandro and Oakland.

At 12:30 p.m., San Leandro police responded to the area of Dutton Avenue and East 14th Street to investigate a vehicle theft that had just occurred.

A man and woman were in a stolen vehicle when they were involved in a traffic collision. They immediately fled the scene and stole a commercial truck, then drove away, San Leandro police said.

"Iimmediately following the collision, the two suspects fled the scene and stole another motorist’s commercial truck vehicle before driving away," the agency said.

"Approximately two hours later, SLPD’s Crime Suppression Detectives located the stolen vehicle occupied by the two suspects in the area of 105th Avenue and International Boulevard in Oakland. Both uniformed officers and detectives converged on the suspects in an attempt to take them into custody," the department said.

As officers converged on the suspects, the driver allegedly accelerated the truck and fled. A pursuit ensued through city streets in Oakland, during which the suspect intentionally rammed three occupied police vehicles and struck an Alameda-Contra Costa Transit bus, police said.

The truck became partially disabled because of the collisions, but continued to flee at a low speed for more than eight minutes. It eventually became fully disabled at the intersection of 96th and Bancroft avenues in Oakland, police said.

Both suspects were taken into custody without further incident and were arrested on suspicion of multiple felony offenses. Police have not released their names.

Two officers involved in the chase were injured in the collisions.

They received medical treatment and were released, police said.
