UPDATE: Officials Say Woman Fatally Struck by BART Train this Morning in San Leandro

BART officials initially reported that the victim was a juvenile, but has since clarified that she was an adult.

The San Leandro BART station has reopened after a woman was struck and killed by a train there this morning, an agency spokeswoman said. The incident was reported at 9:31 a.m. involving a train traveling from Fremont to Daly City, BART spokeswoman Alicia Trost said.

Trost initially reported that the victim was a juvenile, but has since clarified that she was an adult. Trost said witnesses reported seeing her jump in front of the train. The death shut down service at both the San Leandro and Oakland Coliseum stations, with BART trains turning around at the Fruitvale and Bay Fair stations, Trost said.

Service was restored at the Oakland Coliseum station by 11 a.m. and the San Leandro station reopened at about 11:45 a.m., Trost said. BART is working on restoring service to Fremont and Dublin-Pleasanton but major delays remain because of the long shutdown this morning.

The incident was reported at 9:31 a.m. involving a train traveling from Fremont to Daly City, BART spokeswoman Alicia Trost said. Trost said she did not immediately have more information about the child, such as an age or gender.

The death has shut down service at both the San Leandro and Oakland Coliseum stations and BART trains are turning around at the Fruitvale and Bay Fair stations, Trost said. BART officials were working to set up buses to take passengers between the affected stations but had not established one as of shortly before 10:15 a.m., Trost said.
