City to Break Ground on Siempre Verde Park Renovations

Workers will break ground Monday on a $3.6 million park rehabilitation project in San Leandro, city officials said.

Engineers and transportation officials will turn over the first dirt on the Siempre Verde Park Rehabilitation project at 4 p.m. at the park’s entrance at 455 Park St. Residents are invited, city officials said.

“Access to parks and recreational open space is critical to the well-being of San Leandro residents, especially our young people,” Mayor Pauline Cutter said in a statement.

Residents, students and others set the rehabilitation process in motion in 2010 when they guided the rehabilitation master plan, according to city officials. Their ideas mean the park will have among other things new play structures, barbecues, restrooms, picnic tables, basketball courts, exercise stations and a space for tai chi, city officials said.

“I’m incredibly excited to see our vision materialize and proud that the Siempre Verde Park Rehabilitation project continues to be a community-driven project,” Cutter said in the statement.

The park’s field will be smaller than before, but more drought-friendly, according to city officials. The main lawn will be surrounded by a walkway and will be big enough for play, city officials said.

“This park promises to be a community asset that the whole city can be proud of,” City Councilmember Corina Lopez said. The park is in her district, according to city officials.
