UPDATE: Deputies Investigate Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting
CHP has closed the northbound State Highway 238 off-ramp to East 14th Street in unincorporated Alameda County for the investigation.

Update:
A carjacking and shooting suspect was killed in a shootout with Alameda County sheriff’s deputies near San Leandro early this morning, a sheriff’s spokesman said. At about 2:20 a.m., Oakland police tried to stop a Dodge Durango allegedly connected to an earlier shooting in their city, but the driver did not pull over and a pursuit ensued, sheriff’s spokesman J.D. Nelson said.
The Durango was later found on Interstate Highway 580 but the driver had fled on foot and a carjacking attempt was reported nearby shortly afterward, Nelson said. The carjacking attempt failed and the suspect allegedly began running along the side of Interstate Highway 238. California Highway Patrol officers confronted him and he opened fire at them, according to Nelson. The shots missed the officers but one struck a passing car.

No one in the car was injured, Nelson said. The foot chase continued and went off the highway at the East 14th Street off-ramp. Sheriff’s deputies then confronted the suspect and a shootout occurred, during which the suspect was killed, Nelson said. No deputies were injured in the shootout, he said.
Authorities are not yet releasing the name of the suspect, a man in his 30s, according to Nelson.
