Crackdown on Short-Term Rentals In San Leandro

A temporary moratorium on non-hosted, short-term rentals was unanimously approved. It could be extended or made permanent.

SAN LEANDRO, CA — The San Leandro City Council has voted unanimously to approve a temporary moratorium on the short-term rental of homes to paid guests when a host or owner isn't present during their stay.

After the initial 45-day period barring so-called non-hosted short-term rentals, the City Council will consider extending the moratorium for up to a year, city officials said.

The city defines a short-term rental as the rental of any residence to paid guests for less than 30 days.

The interim ordinance approved by the City Council at a special meeting on Monday is effective immediately while the council further discusses a long-term policy on the matter.

City officials said the council held the special meeting because there have been increasing complaints about short-term rentals, the commercialization of single-family homes in residential areas and problems identified with short-term online listings.
