Deputies Fatally Shoot Unarmed Person In San Leandro: DOJ

The deputies shot the person as he exited his home in the 16000 block of Selborne Drive, authorities said.

SAN LEANDRO, CA — Alameda County deputies shot and killed an unarmed person early Monday morning in San Leandro, authorities said.

Deputies say they received a report about a person claiming he had a gun and wanted to harm other people.

The deputies responded around 3:19 a.m. to the 16000 block of Selborne Drive in unincorporated San Leandro and established a perimeter around the person's home, according to the Alameda County Sheriff's Office.

"During the encounter, the individual exited the residence and presented an immediate threat to the deputies," the Alameda County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. "As a result, two deputies discharged their firearms."

The gunfire struck the person, and he later died from his injuries, authorities said. He has yet to be publicly identified.

The deputies accused of shooting the man have been placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with the sheriff's office policy, according to authorities.

As per California law, whenever police shoot an unarmed man, the California Department of Justice will review the shooting before turning over the investigation to its Prosecutions Section within the Criminal Law Division for an independent review, according to authorities.
