Grandmother, Two Children Escape San Leandro Fire (Video)

BREAKING: A smoke detector went off, allowing the family to escape. The youngest was just 3-months-old.

SAN LEANDRO, CA — A grandmother and two young children, ages 3-months and 10 years, escaped from a house fire in San Leandro Wednesday morning. A smoke detector alerted them to the fire, according to the Alameda County Fire Department.

The fire was reported at 11:25 a.m. in the 14000 block of Birch Street. When firefighters arrived, flames and smoke were coming out of the back of the house.

Firefighters managed to restrict the flames to just one bedroom and an adjacent hallway.

The cause of the fire has been pinpointed — the failure of electrical equipment charging remote control car rechargeable batteries.

A family of four and their dog have been displaced temporarily by the fire.
