Juniors golfers swing away Thursday during the San Leandro City Golf Championship.

More than 200 junior golfers, 7 to 17 years old, competed in the San Leandro City Junior Golf Championship on Thursday.

The tournament, which has been held every year since 1963, attracts junior golfers from all around Northern California. Many of those who played Thursday were from the Bay Area. But others came from places such as the Monterey Peninsula, Fresno and Chico.

The event is associated with the Junior Golf Association of Northern California, which sanctions about 100 tournaments in Northern California, Nevada and Oregon.

"The JGANC is just a wonderful program for the kids," said Mike Alderete of Moraga, who, returning from a business trip, came straight to the course from Oakland International Airport to watch his son, Matthew, finish his round.

"All the kids out here, they're all nice kids," Alderete said. "You see lots of good sportsmanship. It 's a good lesson for life."
