Man Arrested Following Deadly San Leandro Hit-And-Run

SAN LEANDRO, CA — Police in San Leandro have arrested a suspect in connection with a fatal hit-and-run collision that occurred Monday.

Jason McDermott, 43, of Oakland, is facing several charges including negligent vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run with injuries, according to the San Leandro Police Department.

On Monday at 4:15 p.m., officers responded to the area of Fairway Drive and Monarch Bay Drive on a report of a hit-and-run collision with injuries.

Responding officers located a Monarch Bay Golf Course employee unconscious and suffering from significant injuries.

Police said the victim had been riding a lawnmower when the collision occurred.

Police also located a black stolen pickup truck at the scene.

Several witnesses reported seeing the truck driving recklessly in the area prior to the collision, and additional witnesses said they saw the truck's occupants fleeing the collision, police said.

Police located one of the occupants of the pickup truck about an hour and a half later several miles from the scene of the hit-and-run. That person was arrested on an outstanding warrant.

Police said they arrested the driver of the vehicle the next day.

The victim ultimately died of his injuries on Wednesday. While his name has not been released, the City of San Leandro provided a link to a Go Fund Me page for the victim's family.
