Ronald Courtney, the San Leandro man with police earlier this month, died Sunday at Eden Medical Center, Alameda County Coroner's Office officials said.

The cause of death has not been determined and is pending a toxicology report, officials said. Results of the test are expected back in a month.

Courtney was involved in a five-hour standoff with police that started late Aug. 1 at his home in trailer park. The incident went past midnight and ended about 2 a.m. on Aug. 2.

Police spokesperson Jeff Tudor said Courtney was not arrested and instead was hospitalized due to pre-existing health issues.

Police, who said Courtney had a dispute with another man prior to the standoff, came to the mobile home park after receiving a report that a gun had been fired. The man who reportedly had the dispute with Courtney said he heard a gunshot as he was walking away from home but had not been hit.

“Once we were able to get inside and investigate,” it was determined that no shots had been fired, Tudor said.

Courtney would have likely been charged with resisting arrest, making a criminal threat and vandalism, but he died before charges could be filed, Tudor said.
