Man Pushing Baby In Stroller Fatally Shot In Hayward

The man was pronounced dead at the scene following the 3 p.m. shooting.

HAYWARD, CA — A tragedy to report in the Cherryland section of unincorporated Hayward - a man pushing a three month old baby in a stroller was shot to death Wednesday afternoon. The infant was not hurt and is currently in protective custody.

"We are in the process of reuniting the child with the mother and are providing support to the family and community," Sgt. Ray Kelley, Alameda County Sheriff's Department spokesman said in a statement.

The shooting happened around 3 p.m. in the 200 block of Willow Avenue.

Deputies who responded to the shooting found the man on the ground suffering from gunshot wounds and he was pronounced dead at the scene, Kelly said.

Investigators are gathering information about the shooting and people are advised to avoid the area, he said.

No suspect information being released at this time.

Kelly said anyone who has information about the shooting should call the sheriff's office at (510) 667-7721.

He described the area, which is near Cherryland Park, as a middle-class residential neighborhood that's not typically a high-crime area.
