SAN LEANDRO, CA — It's the time of year when gardeners are itching to get into the yard to start digging up flower and vegetable beds.

Miyo Burnett has a jump-start on the season — she planted flax seeds in egg shells at the beginning of the month. The planting medium is a mixture of vermiculite and seed-starter soil.
