San Leandro Churches to Revive "Ecumenical Good Friday Service"

Good Friday, April 14, 2017, 12:00pm at All Saints, 911 Dowling Blvd, San Leandro, churches from throughout the city will gather together.

San Leandro, CA – For several years churches in San Leandro have gathered on Good Friday—the day Jesus Christ was crucified—to hold an Ecumenical Good Friday Service. This gathering lapsed last year due to leadership transitions, however a number of churches have come together again to resurrect this local tradition. On April 14, at noontime, all are invited to attend the San Leandro Ecumenical Good Friday Service at All Saints Episcopal Church, 911 Dowling Boulevard, San Leandro.

One of Jesus’ last prayers was for unity among his followers: “The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.” (John 17:22-23). This service will include familiar hymns and reflections on Jesus’ “Seven Last Words” by ministers from San Leandro churches including Christ Presbyterian, Epiphany Lutheran, Church of Christ, First Presbyterian, and First United Methodist Church.

Rose Padilla Johnson, Chief Executive Officer of Davis Street (www.davisstreet.org) will also offer a reflection during the service, and an offering will be taken to support Davis Street’s services to low income residents of our community.
