San Leandro Girl's Love of Animals Helps Her To Learn Math

Iris Armstrong, 11, of San Leandro and a student at The Renaissance International School, creates Cat Math, to help her learn long division

Iris Armstrong, age 11,of San Leandro, did not like math, but she used her love of animals and her desire to learn as motivation to create Cat Math, a way to help her understand and enjoy long division. The cats represent a numeric code, which provides a way to visualize numbers.

Iris is a student at The Renaissance International School, a Montessori school in Oakland. In Montessori schools, teachers follow the interest of the child and support their discoveries.

Iris also created a Cat Math T-Shirt which is a fundraiser for a November trip to the Montessori Model United Nations program in China which 13 students from The Renaissance International School will be attending.
