San Leandro Man Suspected of Setting Off Chain of Crashes on I-880 Wednesday Morning

Bay City News—A San Leandro man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence Wednesday morning after his car apparently set off a chain of crashes that ended with a big rig spilling hundreds of gallons of fuel in Oakland, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Manh Tran, 24, of San Leandro, driving a white Acura RSX, struck an Audi on the right-hand shoulder of northbound Interstate Highway 880 near Market Street in Oakland just after midnight, CHP Officer Sam Morgan said.

The Acura reportedly drifted onto the right-hand shoulder of the highway and hit the Audi, which was stopped on the side of the road.

The crash caused the Acura to spin out of control and crash into a Toyota and a big-rig truck, according to the CHP.

The collision caused the big rig to crash into the right shoulder wall, veer left across the lanes of traffic, and crash into the center divider.

The big rig spilled about 200 gallons of diesel fuel during the crash and crews spent hours cleaning all northbound traffic lanes until about 7 a.m., when lanes were reopened, according to the CHP.

The drivers of the big rig and the Toyota were not injured in the crash.

The driver of the Audi, a 20-year-old man from Novato, and his three passengers were taken to Highland Hospital with moderate to minor injuries, according to the CHP.

No update on the condition of the injured people was available as of 5 p.m.

Tran was picked up by a passerby who did not know Tran was involved in the crash, Morgan said.

Officers later located Tran in San Leandro and arrested him at about 11:30 a.m. on suspicion of felony hit and run, felony DUI and misdemeanor driving on a suspended license, Morgan said.

No other arrests were reported.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
