Assault Gun-Toting Suspect: San Leandro OIS Death
A stolen vehicle police chase ended in death for the suspect.

SAN LEANDRO, CA — One man is dead following an officer-involved shooting by a San Leandro police officer. It followed a stolen vehicle pursuit that began in San Leandro and ended in Oakland. The names of the officer and the man who died have not been released.
According to San Leandro Police, officers began their pursuit around 11 p.m. on Wednesday. Officers believed that the driver was armed with a gun.
The black Acura being chased crashed into a parked vehicle in the 10400 block of Pearmain Street.

In an update Thursday afternoon, police report, "After the crash, the man immediately exited the Acura holding an assault rifle. At the same time an 8-year San Leandro K9 officer exited his vehicle, deployed his K-9 partner and saw the man holding a weapon. The officer used his service weapon. The man ran north on Pearmain Street then ran east on Apple Street before running into the front yard of a residence in the 10400 block of Pippin Street. The officer ran after the man and used his service weapon again, striking the man in his upper torso."
The driver died at the scene despite life-saving measures by paramedics.

No police officers were injured.
The Oakland Police Department will be the lead law enforcement agency in charge of the shooting investigation, and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office will also conduct an independent investigation.
The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on routine administrative leave.
Kane, a two-year-old Belgian Malinois police dog, ran off during the unfolding incident. He was missing for 8 hours, but has has since been recovered safely in San Leandro.
