Senior Hit, Killed While Crossing in Crosswalk Near Bayfair Mall

The coroner's office has identified the victim as 79-year-old Karl Karlsson of San Lorenzo.

The 79-year-old San Lorenzo man hit by a car near Bayfair Mall on Wednesday died hours after being taken to the hospital, according to the Alameda County Coroner's Bureau. The man was identified as Karl Karlsson. 

Karlsson was struck by a car while crossing Fairmont Drive at Bayfair Way in a marked crosswalk, a spokesperson for the coroner's bureau said. The incident happened shortly before 11 a.m., according to San Leandro police.

Karlsson was taken to Eden Medical Center with serious injuries. He died several hours later, according to the coroner's bureau.

The woman who struck Karlsson was turning left out of Fairmont Square Shopping Center when she hit him with her blue 4-door Honda, according to Lt. Jeff Tudor, a police department spokesperson.

No one has been arrested, police said, and no other injuries were reported. Police are investigating the accident.
