Stolen Truck, Drug Paraphernalia Lead To San Leandro Arrest: Cops

Police say the man was already on probation.

SAN LEANDRO, CA — San Leandro Police arrested a man Tuesday for driving a stolen truck with drug paraphernalia, they report. Taken into custody was 31 yr-old San Leandro resident Anthony Nunes.

An officer stopped a white Dodge truck around 4:30 p.m. During the stop, the officer learned that the driver, Nunes, was on probation. As a condition of his probation, the officer searched the truck. Inside, the officer found a "meth pipe" used for smoking narcotics. The officer also noticed that the steering column was damaged and the key in the ignition did not fit properly.

At that point, the officer contacted the registered owner of the truck who said that no one had permission to drive it.

"We have to give credit to the observant officer who noticed the decoy key in the ignition," said San Leandro Police Lieutenant Isaac Benabou. "This was an unreported stolen vehicle that would have eluded us had the officer not noticed the cover-up attempt by the suspect."

Nunes is being held on suspicion of auto theft, burglary tools and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is in custody at Alameda County's Santa Rita Jail in Dublin.
