Avoid a City Fine: Know the Updated Tree Preservation Ordinance
The San Marino City Council recently updated the City's Tree Preservation Ordinance, so find out what is allowed and not allowed to avoid penalty.

In an effort to make it easier to re-landscape properties without damaging the visual character of the City’s neighborhoods, the City of San Marino recently updated its Tree Preservation Ordinance (SMCC 23.06.15).
The following are City highlights of the ordinance:

- A permit is no longer required for the removal of an “established tree” from the rear or interior side yard (with the exception of oak trees).
- City Council approval is required before removing an oak tree as part of a landscape plan for rear yards.
- Tougher fines have been instituted for persons who irreversibly damage trees or remove, without a permit, an established tree from a front yard or street side yard or oak trees from ANY yard. Fines range from $5,000-$25,000 depending on the tree size.
