Exploring the Crowell Legacy in San Marino

Builder Thomas Crowell left a lasting legacy in San Marino and surrounding areas.

The Crowell name left a big mark in both Pasadena and San Marino. William C. Crowell was one of the most well-known builders in the area in the early 1900s and built many well-known commercial, public, and school buildings in Pasadena and surrounding cities, many designed by notable architects such as Greene & Greene, Julia Morgan, Myron Hunt, and Gordon Kaufmann. Until 1938, the Crowell Company constructed all the buildings on the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) campus and the firm also built the Pasadena Civic Auditorium and the Pasadena Public Library among other iconic structures.

For his son, Robert A. Crowell, who would later run the company, the elder Crowell built this French Period Revival home in 1931.The Robert Crowell House was designed by architect Thomas Mulvin and built by the William C. Crowell Company. .A photograph of the house, taken shortly after its completion, can be found in the William Crowell collection at the Pasadena Museum of History. The home is historically significant due to its association with these prominent builders, its fine design and its contribution to the architectural and historical context of the elegant Coniston Place neighborhood.

On the ground floor, exceptional wood detail graces entry, living room and stairway.
