Until 1938, the Crowell Company constructed all the buildings on the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) campus and the firm also built the Pasadena Civic Auditorium and the Pasadena Public Library among other iconic structures.

For his son, Robert A. Crowell, who would later run the company, the elder Crowell built this French Period Revival home in 1931.The Robert Crowell House was designed by architect Thomas Mulvin and built by the William C. Crowell Company. .A photograph of the house, taken shortly after its completion, can be found in the William Crowell collection at the Pasadena Museum of History.
