The Honorable Mike Eng was elected to the board of Trustees of the Los Angeles Community College District on March 5, 2013 placing first in his race earning over 235,000 votes.
The LA Community College District is the largest community college system in the United States and one of the largest in the world. It consists of 9 district campuses spread out over 880 square miles in 40 cities in which reside 5 million people. The LACCD serves 250,000 students.
Mike previously served six years as a State Assemblyman representing the 49th Assembly District which included San Marino. During his terms in chaired three of the legislature's critical policy committees: Transportation, Banking and Finance, and Business, Professions and Consumer Protection. He was Chair of Assembly Select Committee on Hate Crimes and was a member of the Assembly Education Committee for three terms.
Mike has taught at Los Angeles Trade Technical College, UCLA and University of the West. He earned his Law Degree at UCLA and founded the immigration law firm of Eng and Nishimura. He also earned his Bachelor's Degrees at the University of Hawaii.
ON 7-14-13 more then 500 guests attended his swearing-in ceremony. U.S. Congresswoman Judy Chu, his wife conducted his Oath of Office at the Almansor Court in Alhambra. Remarks were delivered with many distinguish guests included State Controller John Chiang, State Senator Ed Hernandez, State Senator Ted Lieu, California Community College Chancellor Jack Scott (RET.), State Assemblyman Ed Chau and our very own San Marian LA County Sheriff Lee Baca.
In Mike's own remark he stated that "he came from a humble family and he was an at risk kid himself...he learned first hand that...Life itself is just too hard for many young people who struggle to survive - the education system will save their soul" He believe " it's always right in education for all ages at all time...and it's the best investment anyone can make is education"
