6-Year-Old Boy Dies After Table Falls On Him At SMC Elementary School Program: Report

The child was attending a private after-school program; the district has closed all multipurpose rooms pending a review, officials said.

BURLINGAME, CA — A 6-year-old boy died last week after a table fell on him during an after-school program at McKinley Elementary School in Burlingame, according to a report by the SF Chronicle.

The San Mateo County Coroner's Office identified the child as Gavin Tsui. He died May 13 on the school campus at 701 Paloma Ave, the SF Chronicle reported.

Gavin was not a student in the Burlingame School District, according to Superintendent Marla Silversmith. He was attending a program run by a private organization that rents space on the McKinley campus, according to a letter Silversmith sent to families and reported by the San Mateo Daily Journal. The district has not identified the organization or released details about how the incident occurred, citing family privacy and an ongoing review.

"While we believe this was an isolated incident, it is being thoroughly reviewed through the proper channels to determine the cause," Silversmith said in the letter, obtained by NBC Bay Area.

Champions, a private before- and after-school provider that operates at McKinley, said in a statement obtained by the SF Chronicle that Gavin was not enrolled in its program. Which program he was attending remained unclear.

The district said counseling and support resources would be available for students and families.
