SAN MATEO, CA — San Mateo Police Department officers and a bystander helped save a man suffering cardiac arrest on a trail at Coyote Point Recreation Area earlier this month, police said.
Dispatchers received a "Hard Fall Notification" at about 3:59 p.m. May 18, along with coordinates for the incident, according to police.
During an initial phone call, dispatchers could hear a man groaning before receiving a second call from a bystander reporting an unconscious man lying face down on a trail.
While officers were responding, dispatchers provided CPR instructions to the bystander after learning the man had stopped breathing.
When officers arrived, they found the victim unconscious and without a pulse. One officer retrieved an automated external defibrillator, or AED, from a patrol vehicle and delivered a shock that restored the man's pulse, police said.
Paramedics later transported the man, who is in his late 20s, to a local hospital for further treatment.
Police credited the bystander's quick response, along with officers' training and access to mobile AED devices, with saving the man's life.
The department said it equipped all 43 patrol vehicles with mobile AEDs about four years ago and provides officers with CPR and first-aid refresher training every two years.
