Teen Killed In Wreck Days After High School Graduation In SMC: Police

The 17-year-old was not wearing a seatbelt when their car launched over the railing, falling 25 feet, police said.

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — A 17-year-old who graduated from Hillsdale High School in San Mateo just two days earlier was killed early Saturday in a car crash.

The crash occurred around 1:30 a.m. on eastbound I-80 at the elevated Seventh Street offramp. A gray Chevrolet Camaro traveling in the fast lane struck the left front of a Recology garbage truck, sending both vehicles into sand barrels at the top of the exit. While the truck came to a stop, the Camaro was launched over the barrels and over the metal bridge railing, falling into the San Francisco Police Department's impound lot at 450 Seventh St.

Two people in the back seat had to be cut out of the vehicle by firefighters. One was taken to a hospital with major injuries.

The other was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 18-year-old driver and a 17-year-old front seat passenger were hospitalized with moderate injuries.

Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors in the crash, police said. The investigation is ongoing.
