SAN MATEO, CA — A driver was cited on suspicion of driving under the influence after a vehicle went about 50 yards down an embankment and crashed into a tree in San Mateo early Saturday morning, police said.
Officers responded to the Western Hills neighborhood after receiving an automatic iPhone Crash Detection alert and found the vehicle off the roadway, according to the San Mateo Police Department.
The driver and passenger were able to get out of the vehicle and were taken to a local hospital for evaluation. Neither appeared to suffer major injuries, police said.
Following an investigation, officers cited the driver on suspicion of DUI.
Police said the crash could have ended much more seriously and reminded motorists to arrange a designated driver or another safe ride home if they have been drinking.
