3 Rescued After Sailboat Capsizes In San Francisco Bay

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — Three Foster City residents were rescued after their sailboat capsized in the San Francisco Bay over the weekend, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office said.

The Sheriff's Office Marine Unit was conducting a training exercise near the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge around 1:30 p.m. Saturday when deputies received reports of a capsized sailboat near Coyote Point.

While responding, deputies learned three people were in the water, holding onto the overturned boat. Two Marine Unit boats arrived a short time later and rescued all three passengers about a half-mile east of San Francisco International Airport, according to the sheriff's office.

"I'm so proud of our Marine Unit, who not only demonstrated their commitment to public safety, but also put their years of experience, training and professionalism on full display by saving three community members from the bay," said Sheriff Ken Binder. "The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office is proud to serve our community on land, in the air and on the water."

The passengers appeared uninjured but were shaking from exposure to the cold water. They were taken to Coyote Point Marina, where San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department personnel evaluated them before clearing them to leave.

Deputies also recovered the sailboat and towed it to Coyote Point Marina.
