Officials said checkpoint locations are selected using data showing where crashes involving alcohol- or drug-impaired drivers occur most frequently. The operation is intended to remove impaired drivers from the road and deter others from driving under the influence.

The Sheriff's Office reminded drivers that impairment can also be caused by prescription and over-the-counter medications, cannabis and other drugs.

A first-time DUI can result in an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties and a suspended license, according to the Sheriff's Office.
