📰 News we're reading

1. $18M In Scholarships Is Waiting For San Mateo Students (patch.com) — San Mateo families are being urged this month to claim more than $18 million in CalKIDS scholarships available to local students in grades 2 through 12. With many San Mateo County students eligible for up to $1,500 each, schools are hosting events and sharing tools to help families confirm eligibility and access funds for college or career training. Residents can also check and claim scholarships anytime online using a student's SSID.

2. Educators Get A Housing Lifeline In San Mateo (patch.com) — San Mateo educators are getting new help with housing as a 74‑unit apartment building in the city is converted into workforce housing reserved over time for local school employees. Through a partnership led by HEART and the County Office of Education, units will gradually be offered at below‑market rents, aiming to keep teachers and staff living closer to San Mateo schools and students.

3. San Mateo County advances rules for autonomous robots (almanacnews.com) — San Mateo County supervisors just advanced new rules requiring permits and worker protections for businesses using autonomous, battery-powered robots in unincorporated areas, which includes parts of greater San Mateo. The proposal would mandate safety disclosures, plans for any displaced workers, and fees to help fire agencies prepare for lithium-ion battery fires, and could take effect soon after a final vote.

4. Rep. Mullin's Water Infrastructure Funding Passes House, Totaling $75 Million, Supporting Critical Local Needs (house.gov) — San Mateo residents could see major water and flood protection upgrades after Rep. Kevin Mullin won House authorization for more than $75 million in county projects, including a Mid-Peninsula water recycling facility and levee studies. While funding still depends on future appropriations and Senate approval, the package targets stormwater, wastewater, and sea-level rise resilience in shoreline communities across the county.

5. Atherton, Menlo Park projects included in $8.1M transportation funding (almanacnews.com subscription) — Transportation planners have approved $8.1 million for safety and connectivity projects along the Highway 101 corridor, including studies of improvements near 101 in San Mateo and Foster City. The mini-grants fund early planning, outreach, and design for bike, pedestrian, and complete streets upgrades in several Peninsula cities, helping local agencies compete for larger state and federal dollars.

  • With all the disheartening news going on every day, I thought you folks would like to know that for the second time, my husband left his backpack on Caltrain and for the second time, it was turned in to Caltrain's Lost and Found, with his wallet,
credit cards, cash, keys, etc., totally intact. We are so grateful. (Nextdoor San Mateo Park)
  • To the teenager on his bike, wearing a dirt bike helmet crossing Mariners and 3rd, around 5:15 pm, please know I did not honk at you, I honked at the car in front of me who blew through the pedestrian crosswalk while turning right while you were
halfway through it. Thank you for wearing a helmet and being safe on your bike. I hope I didn't scare you. (Nextdoor Mariner's Island)
