Today's riddle: Why was the scarecrow given an award? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Americans are reading less. Bay Area 'introvert happy hours' are booming (mercurynews.com) — Silent Book Club meetups are now happening regularly in San Mateo, including a special Banned Books Week read-in at the San Mateo Public Library on Oct. 10. The Bay Area–born movement offers quiet, low-pressure gatherings for readers who want company without small talk, with chapters across nearby cities and flexible formats like audiobook walks and themed sessions.
2. San Mateo: Teenager Arrested For Allegedly Possessing Loaded, Unserialized Firearm (newsbreak.com) — San Mateo police arrested a 17-year-old local boy Friday night after finding a loaded, unserialized handgun and more than an ounce of marijuana during a traffic stop at East Fourth Avenue and Railroad Avenue. The teen was booked into Hillcrest Juvenile Hall on multiple firearm-related allegations, highlighting ongoing concerns about ghost guns and youth access to weapons in the city.
3. San Mateo man arrested in connection with hit-and-run, home burglary (sfchronicle.com) — San Mateo residents may notice increased police activity after a hit-and-run early Saturday on West 40th Avenue led to a nearby home burglary and vehicle break-ins, all allegedly tied to 21-year-old David Estrada of San Mateo. Witnesses helped officers identify and arrest him, and he was booked into San Mateo County Jail with a court appearance expected Monday.
4. California enacts plug-in solar bill, creating largest US balcony solar market (pv-magazine.com) — A new California law taking effect Jan. 1, 2027 will let residents, including those in northern San Mateo County, plug small balcony-style solar panels directly into home outlets without utility permission or interconnection fees. The bill caps output at 1,200 watts per dwelling and could make it easier for renters and condo owners to cut power bills, though key provisions expire in 2030 unless renewed.
5. These 5 new Bay Area trails are perfect for fall hikes (newsbreak.com) — If you're looking to stretch your legs close to home, the new Skyline Watershed Ridge Trail above San Mateo offers six miles of sweeping Bay and Pacific views, but requires a free permit and early arrival for parking. It's one of several recently opened Bay Area routes, alongside fresh trails in La Honda, Bodega Bay, Napa County, and Muir Woods.
