Today's riddle: Why do Norway's navy ships all have barcodes? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Hit-And-Run Investigation Uncovers Burglary, Stolen Cars In San Mateo: Police (patch.com) — San Mateo police say a hit-and-run on West 40th Avenue early Saturday led them to a string of vehicle break-ins, a home burglary, and two stolen cars in the same neighborhood. Officers ultimately arrested 21-year-old San Mateo resident David Estrada, recovering burglary tools and weapons, and booked him into San Mateo County Jail on multiple felony and misdemeanor charges.
2. Teen Arrested With Loaded Ghost Gun In San Mateo: Police (patch.com) — A 17-year-old San Mateo boy was arrested after police stopped a car near East Fourth Avenue and Railroad Avenue and reportedly found a loaded, unserialized "ghost gun" and over an ounce of marijuana. Officers booked the teen into Hillcrest Juvenile Hall on multiple firearm-related allegations, underscoring ongoing concerns about illegal weapons in local neighborhoods.
3. Daytime and Overnight Lane & Ramp Closures Scheduled on U.S. 101 (ca.gov) — Drivers in San Mateo County, including San Mateo residents using U.S. 101, should expect intermittent daytime and overnight lane and ramp closures between South San Francisco and East Palo Alto through October 30. Caltrans crews will be paving, upgrading guardrails and drainage, and improving ADA curb ramps as part of a major $177 million rehabilitation project, which may bring noise and temporary disruptions but aims to improve safety and traffic flow.
4. Developer sues Menlo Park over city actions tied to 665-home project (mercurynews.com) — A high-stakes lawsuit over a 665-home project in Menlo Park is now before San Mateo County Superior Court, potentially setting a statewide precedent on how much control cities retain over housing approvals. With state officials warning Menlo Park of millions in possible penalties, the case could reshape how nearby communities, including San Mateo, navigate affordable housing mandates and large mixed-use developments.
5. Lorella Elaine (Swenson) Swain (leadericcpa.com) — Longtime former San Mateo resident Lorella Elaine Swain, who later settled in Tampa, has died at 75 after a lengthy illness. She and her husband Roger once made their home in San Mateo, where their daughter Amanda was born, before moving to Florida, and she is remembered as a devoted mother, sister and Buccaneers fan who cherished family visits and helping loved ones.
