SAN MATEO, CA — A 25-year-old San Mateo resident died Monday after losing control of a motorcycle and striking a light pole, prompting an investigation into the fatal crash, police said.
The collision was reported around 5:30 p.m. Monday on Franklin Parkway just east of Baze Road, according to the San Mateo Police Department.
Officers arrived to find the motorcyclist in the roadway with major injuries, a crashed motorcycle and a severed city light pole. Officers and firefighters attempted lifesaving measures before paramedics took over CPR, but the rider died at the scene, police said.
A preliminary investigation indicates speed was likely a contributing factor, officials said.
Police said the motorcyclist was traveling eastbound on Franklin Parkway when he lost control, left the roadway and struck the pole.
No other vehicles were involved, and the rider was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, according to police.
Franklin Parkway was closed between Baze Road and Saratoga Avenue for nearly three hours while investigators examined the scene and worked to determine the cause of the collision.
Police did not release the victim's name.
The San Mateo County Coroner's Office releases victims' identities after notifying their next of kin, according to the department.
