Sophia, Barry, and Tessa served on the SEAP Steering Committee this academic year. SEAP is a nonpartisan program founded in 2018 to empower students to lead the way in civic engagement in their schools through organizing and spearheading programs to promote voter registration, preregistration, and education.
As members of the SEAP Steering Committee, Sophia, Barry, and Tessa worked with representatives of the Marin County Elections Department, the Marin County Office of Education, and the League of Women Voters to recruit, train, and implement strategies to engage 78 Marin County student ambassadors from 15 schools in the elections process.
Participating in regular Zoom strategy sessions, Sophia, Barry, and Tessa helped engage the student ambassadors by designing recruitment ads, managing social media campaigns, overseeing and problem-solving programs in specific schools, supporting outreach activities, tabling at special events, and helping plan and speak at all-student meetings to discuss action plans. In addition, they helped plan and run the highly successful April 26 Youth Town Hall, where Marin County mayors and elected officials discussed community issues with more than 70 students in a student-led forum.
Beyond their outstanding leadership in SEAP, each student has been engaged in significant activities in their own schools and communities. Sophia participated in track and field, founded a friendship bracelet club, and worked part-time. Barry has volunteered in programs focused on mental health awareness and substance use prevention and is on his school’s golf team. Tessa is senior class president, where she has raised more than $15,000 for her class, and works part-time in a restaurant.
What three words best describe your star student?
For all three: energetic, creative, committed.
Keep up the great work, Sophia, Barry and Tessa! If you know a star student who deserves recognition, we want to hear about them! Click here to nominate them to be featured on Patch.
