Unexpected Death Leaves Marin County's Probation Department Mourning Leader Remembered For Changing Lives

MARIN COUNTY, CA — Marin County is mourning the loss of the leader of its probation department, who spent six years overseeing the agency while expanding rehabilitation programs, strengthening community partnerships and championing restorative justice, officials said Monday.

Marlon Washington died Friday. County officials did not release additional details about the circumstances of his death.

Washington joined Marin County in 2020, becoming the county's first Black chief probation officer and one of only three Black chief probation officers in California at the time of his appointment. During his tenure, he expanded evidence-based practices, championed restorative justice and focused on helping people successfully reintegrate into their communities.

"Chief Washington devoted his career to helping people build better futures," said Derek Johnson, Marin County executive. "He was a thoughtful and principled leader whose compassion, integrity, and unwavering commitment to service touched countless lives. His genuine care for people made him an exceptional leader and an even better human being."

Throughout his nearly 30-year career in probation and juvenile justice, Washington emphasized mentorship, community partnerships and opportunities for young people, officials said.

In Marin, he helped lead the county's annual Wall of Change celebration honoring people on probation who turned their lives around, expanded the Clean Slate program and supported probation services at the Southern Marin Annex in Marin City. He also took pride in the department's Career Explorers paid internship program for young people interested in public service, official said.

Earlier this month, Washington reflected on his leadership philosophy in a message to staff.

"Rather than focusing solely on managing operations, I concentrated on creating a shared vision, empowering staff, and fostering innovation," Washington said. "I believe transformational leadership is about inspiring people to see beyond the challenges of today and engage in building a stronger future for the organization and the communities we serve."

Before coming to Marin County, Washington served as juvenile hall superintendent in Napa County and held several leadership positions during his career with the Contra Costa County Probation Department.

"Marlon Washington will be remembered for the integrity, humility, and compassion he brought to his work every day," said Eric Lucan, president of the Marin County Board of Supervisors. "He cared deeply about serving the public and was especially passionate about creating opportunities for young people and helping those involved in the justice system build better futures."

Assistant Chief Probation Officer Ed Randle has been appointed interim chief probation officer while the county develops a long-term leadership plan. Officials said the department will continue operating without interruption.

The county said memorial service information will be shared at a later date in accordance with Washington's family's wishes.
