Property Tax Bills Are In The Mail: What Marin Homeowners Need To Know

The county mailed 91,194 tax bills totaling about $1.6 billion, with the first payment deadline approaching.

MARIN COUNTY, CA — Marin County property owners should be checking their mailboxes as the county sends out 91,194 secured property tax bills for the 2026-27 fiscal year.

The bills represent about $1.6 billion in property taxes, voter-approved debt, parcel taxes and special assessments. The county's total tax roll increased 3.62 percent from the previous year.

The first installment is due Nov. 1 and must be paid by 5 p.m. Dec. 10 to avoid a late penalty. Online payments can be made until 11:59 p.m. that day.

The second installment is due Feb. 1, 2027, and must be paid by April 12, 2027, without a penalty because the usual April 10 deadline falls on a Saturday.

The county also redesigned the property tax bill with a new format, font and layout intended to make information easier to find and read. A new QR code provides access to the Tax Collector's website for payments and additional information.

"The online portal provides property owners with a quick and secure way to view their bill and make a payment," Marin County Director of Finance Mina Martinovich said. "Electronic check payments are free, and taxpayers receive immediate confirmation that their payment has been submitted."

Property owners can view and pay their bills online using their assessor parcel number. Payments can also be made by phone, mail or in person.

Credit and debit card payments are subject to a 2.35% third-party service fee. Electronic check payments are free.

Property owners who have not received a bill by mid-October, particularly recent homebuyers, should contact the Tax Collector's Office. Not receiving a mailed bill does not relieve property owners of their responsibility to pay on time.

The Tax Collector's Office is located at the Marin County Civic Center in San Rafael and is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays. Questions about tax bills and payments can be directed to 415-473-6133.

Homeowners who qualify may also be eligible for property tax exemptions or California's Property Tax Postponement Program. Applications for the 2026-27 postponement program will be accepted from Oct. 1, 2026, through Feb. 10, 2027.
